Training requirements๏
The Training Requirements section of an SOP outlines what knowledge, skills, qualifications, or resources a person must have before they are allowed to perform the procedure. Its purpose is to ensure that only properly prepared individuals carry out the task, which protects quality, safety, and consistency. It can be separated into sections, for example; prerequisites, and training materials needed.
Example content:
๐งฌ Bioinformatics QC Procedure
Example content from a bioinformatics SOP outlining the procedure for assessing the quality of Illumina sequencing data prior to downstream bioinformatics analyses.
Training Requirements
Prior to proceeding with the bioinformatics QC procedure, bioinformaticians must have completed the bioinformatics duty rota competency training as outlined in SOP 088.
๐ฉโ๐ฌ Staff Training Procedure
Example content from an SOP outlining a training procedure
Training Requirements
1. Prerequisites
- Before attending training, trainees must have:
Completed any required prerequisite training relevant to the topic
Submitted proof of prior competency (certificates, assessments, or supervisor confirmation)
Met any equipment or software access requirements (if applicable)
The Training Coordinator must verify prerequisites before enrolment.
2. Materials Required
Training slides, handouts, or written guidance
Checklist or rubric for competency assessment
Training attendance and feedback forms
Required resources for the topic (equipment, software, accounts, mock datasets, etc., depending on the training)
๐ Galaxy Training Procedure
Example content from a training SOP detailing the standardised procedure for training on the Galaxy platform
Training Requirements
Prerequisites
Coordinator confirms each trainee has recorded prior competencies (on file in QMS/SharePoint) for:
Basic NGS concepts (FASTQ, reference genomes, mapping, variant calling).
Intro Galaxy use (histories, datasets, tools, running jobs).
Evidence required before enrolment: prior certificates/training records or brief competence check (short task or quiz).
If not met: trainee completes prerequisite training before joining this module.
๐งช Laboratory Procedure
Example content from a wet-lab SOP outlining the procedure for preparing sequencing libraries using the Illumina DNA Prep kit.
Training Requirements
Prior to conducting the procedure outlined in this SOP lab staff must have completed the associated competency training:
Library preperation competenecy assessment
๐ป Code Update & Review Procedure
Example content from an SOP outlining the procedure for updating and reviewing code within the Luma Genomics Unit (LGU).
Training Requirements
Prior to participating in the code review process bioinformatician must have completed relevant training as outlined below:
Use of GitLab - competency assessment (SOP 61)
Code review - competency assessment (SOP 013)
